For those of you with a GSM Galaxy Note 2 (such as AT&T Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317, T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 SGH-T999, or any Note 2 that has a SIM slot but SIM is locked to specific carrier), there’s an easy, “free” way to unlock the SIM so you can use another SIM card from another carrier or perhaps you want to unlock SIM so you can use your phone while traveling internationally.
Galaxy Note 2 Root!
For this week, check out the Ottoman ROM for your Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7100.
Based on the latest LJ2 firmware, the Ottoman ROM brings a clean and stable performance for your GT-N7100 with support for multi-languages.
The Ottoman ROM comes with fully customized theme with a ton of custom icons, wallpapers, and performance optimizations like tweaked pegasusq governor for faster performance/better battery life without overclocking.
Probably one of the coolest features of rooting and custom ROMs/Kernels is that you can overclock your phone to a blazing CPU frequency, resulting in a Note 2 that can run near 30-50% faster than a stock phone.
Well, if you have a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 SGH-T889 (or Canadian models starting with SGH-T889), you can install the Bullet kernel that supports up to a whopping 1.9Ghz overclocking. Now, not all phones support such high CPU clock speeds but who knows, you might be one of the lucky ones.
The other day my T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 ended up in a “Factory Mode” with Phone, CSC, PDA, and various other things displaying over the home screen in yellow characters with a box. Well, it was really annoying but there’s a quick fix for it.
You will first need a rooted phone and edit the file using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer.
One of my favorite ROM developers Criskelo has released his Criskelo ROM for the Galaxy Note GT-N7100. Similar to its Galaxy S3 little bro, the Criskelo ROM comes with many similar features.
This is a pretty solid ROM with lots of cool stuff like Aroma installer, Roletube (for downloading YouTube videos), 4×5 launcher, call recording, 23 toggles, and lots more.
If you want some serious 1.8Ghz quad-core speeds, multi-view, and wifi-calling, there’s finally a ROM for that, MyROM.
Based on latest T889UVALK8 firmware, MyROM brings UI/RAM/Network speed tweaks along with Note2Core kernel (overclocked to 1.8Ghz out of the box, no need to install SetCPU). Pretty simple ROM yet very fast and brings some of the latest multi-view features.
For this week’s ROM of the week on the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 SGH-I317 (or Canadian SGH-I317M), check out NOTEorious Prime ROM. Notable features include Multi-Window enabled for all apps, Multiview control app (to add any apps to multi-window bar), Android 4.2 Photo Sphere Camera + Note 2 Camera, Awesome Beats app, and Pop-up browser. Also, wifi tethering is enabled.
Couple days ago, I went on a trip to Lake Tahoe to see snow with my rooted Verizon Galaxy Note 2 SCH-I605. Well, I didn’t realize that I didn’t setup wifi tether but was able to get it working while on the way there.
It’s pretty simple, you will need a rooted Verizon Note 2 and also use a modified Wifi Tether app.
For those of you with AT&T Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317 (or Canadian models starting with SGH-i317 model number), check out Jedi X ROM, which comes with a load of features like Multi-window and Multi Window control app.
Based on N7105 ROM, the Jedi X ROM brings the best of the latest Galaxy Note 2 features such as multi-window, de-bloated, and Awesome Beats audio for headphone owners. This is another great ROM by Android developer Ptmr3 (you can follow him on Twitter here)
For those of you with a Verizon Galaxy Note 2 SCH-i605, you might be hugely disappointed that Verizon (has again) locked bootloader. Which means currently we cannot install custom recovery like CWM Recovery or install custom kernels.
