For this week’s Note 2 ROM of the week for all AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, Canadian, GT-N7100, and GT-N7105, check out Carbon ROM.

Based on latest Android 4.3, Carbon ROM is an AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) with customizable transition animations, AOKP-like ROM Control (but slightly different taste), and great performance/battery life out of the box.

I’ve actually been using ProBAM/PACMan ROM for almost a week now but recently switched to Carbon ROM as I really love the customizable transition animations. ย It’s definitely refreshing to be able to choose my own animations on my own phone.

Other than that, Carbon ROM provides pretty much every feature AOKP ROM Control features, slightly different in some ways with new features like Active Display and many others. ย And there are some nice hidden easter egg features on the ROM such as your contacts showing up with dialer in mini boxes, I have not found them all yet. ย (If you see any cool ones, don’t forget to post them in the comments box below.)

I am so getting tired of aosp roms. When will they ever come out with some TouchWiz roms because I really love my multi window and other features that touchwiz has.

    • Vyze says:

One of the best things about Linux is that if you don’t like something about a program or operating system you can just wrote your own! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Tele says:

Hey Max, thanks again for your great work…I am running probam at the moment and I love it big time, so when you say you prefer this Carbon rom, I can’t wait to try it.
Thanks again for all your hard work – your site is awesome and much appreciated!

  3. Mac says:

Jedi X17 is your best bet for an effective ‘touchwiz’ ROM that you can use multi window on. I have Jedi X17 + Note2Core kernel + SetCPU app = 8200-8500 quadrant scores on my Note 2 (N7105) Hope that helps!

  4. john sperm says:

I’m using pacman right know and I love it.. The only thing is that my volume speaker it’s not loud enough… I can’t wait to try carbon… Thank brother love your work… ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Nick says:

How’s the volume on this rom? I feel that the biggest problem I have with Carbon Roms and other 4.2.2 or 4.3 roms, the volume is never loud enough.

  6. Nguyen Inc. says:

i love this rom but how do you get the pictures to go onto the memory card without having to take up so much space on my phone itself?

  7. MrMcBill says:

Tweaked 2.5 with moto/alexander theme is a great 4.1.2 rom. The only time I’m not using tweaked is when I’m using one of the Jedi X roms. Just wish there was some more options for customization with Jedi.

  8. Paul Murphy says:

All the 4.3 ROMs I have tried on my Verizon note 2 I can only receive text messages but not send. When I restore to a 4.1 or a 4.2 ROM I have no texting issue. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated

  9. JonSkywalker says:

This maybe a bit of a noob question Max, but does this rom display the battery percentage on top? I can’t seem to find the option for it anywhere. The previous 4.3 Pac rom displayed the battery percentage for me. Other than that, Rom seems to be running stable so far. Thanks for all your hard work man!

  10. Jeremy Graham says:

I have been running carbon for a while now and must say it is great. For my fellow Sprint users, go to XDA and search for the devil kernel and the apk devil tools from the forum…not the playstore. they help your rom out immensely. I take no credit for it at all, but the dev who made the tools helped the battery life out very noticeably and the apk helps with the vibrate issue when you flash the kernel and the sound issue. Overall, the rom is a great asset to the Sprint Note II community.

  11. alex says:

how come all of the AOKP roms have battery issues on my SGH-i317m? while JediX runs as long as a whole day, and still leaves me with around 40% in the end, AOKP roms seem to have this weird issue of having battery drops, and in general draining battery faster. are there any solution for that?

  12. Jon Skywalker says:

Yeah I’ve been experiencing the same problems as well, don’t know what it could be. This ROM hasn’t been performing well for me, I barely get 4G LTE service, just 3g most of the time. I have flashed the ROM many times and still no luck. I don’t know what could it be. Jedi x16 worked flawlessly for me, battery was great.

    • Chris says:

I have been having some issues with the 4g LTE service as well. I installed Carbon ROM on Wednesday and ever since I have noticed that the signal bar has never reached over 3 bars. Before this installation, I had CleanRom SE ATT with no issues until a issue with my messaging and framework caused the phone to crash. I also noticed like Alex stated that power does go rather quickly. I don’t have my data on or many other services that often, and my phone is idle except for sending about 10 texts an hour. Yet, the battery at the end of the day after fully charging is about 45-55%.

As far as the ROM goes, I like it. The layout is very pleasing and compared to the Samsung appearance it is seems very inviting to customization. However, maybe the ROM developers could use an actual I317 to create a ROM to tackle the battery and signal issue even though I thank them for creating these ROMs to give us different looks and setups for our Note 2’s.

      • GuccizBud says:

Why don’t you try flashing a different modem for your area? On my old i9000 I always had poor signal strength until I flashed a modem which is normally used in Asia (I’m in Montreal) because it was conceived for densely populated areas with lots of buildings, which is the case with large Eastern Asian cities; hence, it was supposed to be stronger at pulling signals. I tried it and it was indeed: for the first time in the almost three years I had the i9000 I could receive and send everything from my basement. And I could flash that modem after flashing any ROM, regardless of what modem came with the ROM. It’s true that for the Note II there isn’t the same availability of stuff there was and is for the i9000, but start searching along those lines and see what you can come up with. If you can find and flash the modem they put in the Note II in Singapore or Hong Kong for example I guarantee your signal problems will be over. Of course, first find and backup the Odin-flashable stock ROM that came with your device so you can backpedal if need be.

  13. Milas says:

Why i cant install samsung apps and allshare from samsung on this rom is it possible to install this aps somehow ?

    • vitolibido says:

for some reason touchwiz and stock android can’t be in the same UI.. not sure why. touchwiz is awesome. everytime i install n oasp rom i miss it dearly.

  14. biomedman says:

how come when I try and install this on my note II I get the droid laying down with a red triangle in the middle section. Now I did have Jedi 17 on here and i wiped it out and cleared everything but I get this when I try and put the Carbon Rom on.

    • julio says:

have you figured out your problem, because i have same issue. android laying on his back, red triangle error and aborted. please help

      • biomedman says:

No I have not, my phone is fine it didn’t mess it up but just want to know why the last three
ROM’s that he has put on I cant use all of them have the 4.3 on them. All three I get the same error.

    • Anthony says:

I keep getting dead android too! =[

      • ElricE says:

There is an option in the recovery install process to install that refers to the zip signature (can’t remember the wording). Install via that option and no hassles… I couldn’t install on my S2 without that workaround despite being fully rooted… it may be because I was running a patched kernel or an S2 issue, not sure

  15. B says:

Broke my Note 2. Flashed it, worked fine. Then over night it crashed. No boot, no Android, no nothing.
Used Odin to bring back to stock non rooted firmware.

Now every fucking time I plug my phone in it resets!

Thanks for your shit recommendation on roms. Had a great phone for almost a year, went to your page and immediately turned to shit.

    Thanks alot.

    • Gary Blake says:

      Ha haaa! Newbie alert.

You cant complain if you did not take a backup.

    • Nguyen Inc. says:

Damn I was a newbie and did it all correctly..cant complain about roms breaking your phone..u just did it wrong..btw max says hes not responsible if you mess up your phone..thats all on you ha ha just saying ..NEWBIE

    • Robert says:

That’s because you don’t know what you are doing, don’t blame someone else for your own f-up. Please read the notes in RED at the end of the video. That’s why he stress to make a backup or a Nandroid you IDIOT!!!

    • Robert says:

Its only a recommendation you don’t have to use it.

    • GuccizBud says:

I seriously can’t believe the balls on this guy. What an idiot.

  16. Hugh Johnson says:

U mad bro? Glad you broke your phone btw blame yourself not a website though.

  17. D Carr says:

I don’t like this ROM at all, I get very bad reception and it freezes up quite frequently, even with a clean install. My girlfriend had full 4g with her stock ROM and I had 2 bars with no internet on this ROM.

    • D Carr says:

Also, the external SD does not always register in Titanium, and AppBackup reads as no external SD at all on this ROM. When in storage, it shows that there is an SD card however, it shows no details.

  18. Ify Michael says:

Hi Max, thanks for ur good works…. Ehmm, I gat a problem installing the flash player Apk and the photoshere on this Rom… It says “file can’t be open”, wanna know if anyone here has encounter this problem no how did u solved it? Thanks for your help in advance.

  19. zedrick says:

I flashed this rom and my it changed all my file name, like my extsdcard is now sdcard1 and my root device is now 0. How do i change this back? I cant do my titanium restore and things because it is now wrong. I tried to rename and it wouldn’t let me.

    • bai - Gee says:

U’ll have to do the transfer manually first. Install ES File Explorer, go to your “0” directory and open the Titanium folder and copy all the files to /mount/sdcard/titanium backup folder and all your backups should now show up in your Titanium app.

  20. Jibraan says:

how can i update the phone.
when trying to update it show
    “Phone has been modified”

  21. Does this rom only support 32gb sd cards?

  22. Karl says:

Hi, I wanted to know does this carbon Rom have in call settings enable/disable dial pad auto completion. Like the HTC. I’m interested in disabling that feature because of too many contacts….
    Thanks

  23. Robert H says:

ROM is great, very stable for 4.3. No issues, no forced closed apps. Phone volume for both the ringer and call is nice and clear and loud. Battery life is above average, fast, smooth, and it gives you automatic ROM updates every few days. Really impressed, mu favorite ROM at the moment. Canadian Note 2 on the Bell Network.

  28. Dimytri Williams says:

Not sure if its just me but even when I set my display on max and turn off the brightness auto adjuster. It would auto adjust itself. Also some other teachers seem to have a mind of their own. Great ROM, but its pretty wonky. Sprint.

  29. elementalesper says:

Can someone please tell me why i317M is not posted here for Compatibility?? or is that the same as the Canadian N7105?? I really want to try this rom as I tried PAC MAN and JEDI x17.. but don’t want to brick my phone. I am using Canadian i317m Rogers

    • Robert H says:

Have the same phone but with Bell. Download the AT$T version and after you install it now thinks your phone model is GT-N7105. However the Baseband version is I317MVLBMA3

  30. roncsmi says:

Hi I just had simple question, is there any way to avoid adding your email and apps manually after flashing new room. I love to flash roms but just have going through process of downloading 100s of apps and setting up 4 or 5 different emails over and over.

  31. Mehmet says:

    Hi,

I figure this would bebthe best spot to ask anyone else having hard reset issues. I have been having them with almost every ROM. I have a gt n7100 and it only happens when watching videos online. If some one has an answer for this it would cure much frustration.

  36. Beau says:

Anyone having an issue when you send pictures they are not coming out clear?

  37. ric says:

Man I’m been flashing ROMs like crazy the last three months following max suggestions but more importantly directions and I have had no a single issue with my note 2 so the person that is complaining about damaging his phone and blaming Max for it provably didn’t follow instructions.

  40. luis says:

how can i fix the no 4g on this rom ? iam not getting any 4g/lte on this rom with a sprint note 2

    • Justin says:

Luis, I played around with the settings a bit and I’ve determined how to get it to work (there may be a more optimal way – so any suggestions are welcomed).

First go to ‘Settings\Wireless & Networks: More…\Mobile networks’ and set the preferred network mode under ‘Network Mode’ as CDMA+LTE/EVDO. The second thing I did was to go to ‘Access Point Names’ and select the ‘Sprint LTE internet’ listing by clicking on the circle to the right-side of the option (clicking elsewhere opens the settings for that APN).

For some reason it seems that whenever I reboot my phone it defaults back to the first APN option, for generic Sprint. I deleted all of the APNs except for the ‘Spring LTE internet’ option to help combat this quirk (don’t worry, if you need the others back you can hit the menu button in the main APN window and select ‘Reset to default’ and it restores all of the listings).

I installed this ROM a few days ago and I have to say that I really like it a lot. I’ve experienced only two real issues with it. First, the ROM update that GooManager prompted me to install broke my S-Pen detection service (CM S Pen as listed under the S-Pen replacements on this website). I ended up re-installing the ROM from scratch and subsequently haven’t installed the ROM update; everything is working perfectly now on the S-Pen front.

The second issue that I’m having is that I intermittently lose my data connectivity: my status bar shows no data notification (i.e. 3G, 4G, LTE), and I have to go back to the APN settings and re-select the Sprint LTE option. This then fixes everything and voila, I have data again. Has anyone else had a similar issue, or have a fix?

  41. yi says:

it doesnt work for me, it says “installation aborted”, but 3.99 of ParanoidAndroid ROM works for me, i have a gtn-7105t. helppppppp!!!

  43. ๅฐๆ™ถ says:

Can’ play Asphalt 7smoothly,anybody else have the same problem?

  44. Fatannasty says:

I wiped data/factory reset- I also formatted /system. However, I receive a error message (E:Error in external/_sd/ carbon -JB-NIGHTLY_20130929-0306-t0lte.zip.) I moved the file over to the internal SD and tried to re-flash….same outcome….Any ideas?

  45. LEBERT says:

can anyone tell me please how to synchronize my facebook contacts.I love this rom but I can’t seem to synchronize my facebook contacts to my phone

  46. Reed says:

Justin, how do you delete all those other APNs?

    • Justin says:

You can delete APNs you don’t want by first clicking on them to open the description (not on the selection circle). Then hit menu and select delete – that’s it. If you should ever need them back, or if you delete the wrong one, you can always restore the default APNs by hitting menu in the APN list and resetting to default.

      • Reed says:

        Thanks for the assist guy.

        • Justin says:

No problem! I hope it works for you.

I have to say I really like this ROM; it definitely gets better battery life, is really customizable and for me seems pretty stable. I tinkered a bit to figure what works the best for S-Pen functionality and used a few different solutions. If you want to keep using your S-pen and even enhance the experience from a TouchWiz ROM I’d suggest trying GMD SPen and Papyrus.

GMD was the only thing I’ve used that actually cost money, but it’s well worth it – I think like $5-6. It recognizes the S-pen being detached and attached without needing assistance from any other application or service. The app can emulate and enhance just about any original feature from Touchwiz.

Before purchasing the GMD I’d tried using the Page Buddy application using the CM S Pen Add-on application to replicate the same effects. I had a fair amount or reliability issues and GMD really fixed them. That developer earned his $5-6, and then some.

          • Reed says:

I actually got over the S Pen age several months, but I’ve always been a fan of the screen size and the way this device performs. It’s just too notch all the way.

          • Reed says:

Yo Justin have you had any issues sending MMS messages? I can’t get any to go out.

  47. Justin says:

No, I haven’t had any issues. I have successfully sent picture messages but haven’t attempted to send any videos.

  48. rod says:

What over clock kernel can I install on this carbon ROM.thanks

  49. vitolibido says:

If you have touchiz 4.2 or higher there is really no need to flash roms becuase no rom will come as perfect glitch free as touch wiz on your gs4 or note 3. if you have older phones or 4.1 and lower than it might be worth it..dont’ ruin a pefect gs4 or note 3. if you have anything else like nexus phone or htc 1 or lg than its worth it too cuz they are boring as hell. imo

  50. Baba Asheri says:

Can anyone help this noob downgrade from this carbon rom to the stock ATT for i317? I have the both roms downloaded with carbon installed but get a FAILED in TWRP when trying to downgrade.

  51. Amazing blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download
it from somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog jump out.
Please let me know where you got your design. Thanks

  52. LD says:

I really like this Rom on my VZW Note II, but I have one issue. When viewing streaming video through the web browser (any browser. Tried chrome, dolphin, boat, etc) the video starts but stops immediately and will not play. Normal videos, movies, etc outside the browser are fine, but anything on the web itself will not play. Am I missing a plugin or something?
Otherwise this is the only issue I have had with this ROM it’s been very stable.

  53. ankur says:

i dnt why but many games are lagging in this rom they all were working gr8 on projectaosp rom ๐Ÿ™ asphalt 8 is lagging so much ;..(

  54. Bill Ortis says:

How do you guys update when using CWR?

Would I simply ‘Install ZIP’ or do I need to clear Cache, etc? I take it that Nightly issues ‘updates’ and not full Roms on a nightly basis? So we should be able to just drop in a update without having to reload ALL of our data each time we do this, right?

Also, what if I have 4 or 5 days worth of updates downloaded into the phone. Should I start updating from the oldest up to the newest downloaded, or is the latest version have ALL of the updates in it? Just curious. Figure I should ask to make sure I cover all my bases.

    Many thanks,

    Bill

    • Max Lee says:

You can usually just install new update over it without any wipe or factory reset, also you can just use the latest update if you have multiple. e.g. use Oct 21st build if that’s the latest.

  55. Jimmy Ng says:

Im kinda new to root (Noobie here) but i check all ur video about root, how to backup and anythings, and finally try to do it in my phone and i did it. Very helping me ! keep up ur good work Max !

  56. Reed says:

Has anyone flashed an over clock kernel with this Rom? If so, link please? I’m using Sprint’s variant of the Note 2.

  57. Matt says:

had to install the release version (1.8) from their website. The nightlies (including the one linked here) would not work. They kept failing when installing. Once I had the release installed, everything looked great but for some reason the keyboard wouldn’t pop up and kept FCing (even though I installed the Gapps listed here and it was working for initial setup so I could get my wifi password entered. Also, the home key wouldn’t do anything even though the checkbox was marked. Might be just me but I’ve installed other ROMs on this phone with no issue. Currently looking for another ROM.

  58. Jimmy Ng says:

    Max..
Noobie question. Im running 29092013 Carbon ROms. but now i want to upgrade it as 26092013 is out. Can anyone tell me the step by step how to update the latest ROMS ?
I have download the latest nightly and GAPPS 4.3 in my SDCARD.So the question are:
Do i need to wipe data/factory reset before installing the new update ? Do i need to wipe cache after installing the rom?

    • Justin says:

no, you don’t need to wipe the cache/dalvik nor do a factory reset when you install a newer version of the same ROM. I just did it a few days ago and the new nightly build is pretty sweet. I’d definitely do a full back up first, just in case something goes wrong. I did also install the updated GAPPS after flashing the new nightly build.

  59. Luis Cortes says:

Hey, I know this might sound like a dumb question, but I have an ATT note 2 unlocked I’m using it with tmobile right now, and I was wondering if I root my phone and install this rom (or any) would it still remain unlocked?

  60. Randy McNary says:

Just installed this yesterday, and so far everything is going great. I love the animations and how smooth everything seems to run. One issue, though. When I power my phone off and plug it in at night, there’s no indicator that it’s charging. The LED does not come on and the battery icon doesn’t show charging. If I leave the phone on, it charges just fine. Is it in fact charging while off?

  61. Justin says:

I’ve had an issue with my GPS since I first installed the ROM, and I just figured out how to fix it – more about that in a minute.

So this ROM has been my daily driver now since Max uploaded it. It is one heck of a sweet ROM, and has but only a few issues. I’ve noticed that my phone randomly restarts itself occasionally, and sometimes when it is locked and the screen is off, the screen won’t illuminate when I try to unlock it. At that point it usually reboots itself.

I just installed the latest nightly build and it seems to run even better than the original image. I noticed some additional features added and it’s definitely worth installing – if you want to install an update to the same ROM you don’t have to clear the cache & dalvik – just install it via TWRP. All your settings etc… will stay the same (though it never hurts to do a full backup before flashing anything).

My GPS hasn’t worked since I moved from the stock TW ROM, and after much fiddling around I finally figured out what you need to do. Apparently Samsung phones have an issue with their GPS radios and flashing non-TW ROMs. What you need to do is PRIOR to flashing a new ROM, make sure that you enable GPS and obtain a full signal lock (as in GMaps). Then immediately boot into recovery and flash away. Something about the signal lock provisions into the GPS chip and enable it to work from then on. What I ended up having to do was backup my Carbon installation, install a TW-based ROM (I used Paranoid), get the GPS lock, reboot into recovery, and then re-flash my backup. What do you know, voila, I was FINALLY able to use my GPS, and got a signal immediately.

  62. Randy McNary says:

Just tried out the nightly (Verizon) for 11/08. The following issues popped up: Swipe feature in the Android keyboard was disabled, GPS took a LONG time to lock, Google Play store would not open.

  63. kmi says:

Hi.. I downloaded the zip and tried to install it vid CWM . But each time I tried, it is showing that “whole file signature failed” n therefore the instalation is not getting complete. Plz, help me .

  64. Mark says:

Thanks for this, Max. I just switched to this on my L900 Sprint Note 2 last night and it’s been solid so far. I’m really liking the much improved batter life.

Thanks again for this site and your work!
