For this week’s Note 2 ROM of the week, check out Slim Kat ROM, available for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, Canadian, GT-N7100, and GT-N7105 variants.

I have been using Slim ROMs (same developers) for awhile since they had ROMs for the Galaxy S2.  Their focus has always been on a “slim” ROM, just as the name implies.  In fact, their default DPI (dots per inch) is lower than stock settings, which results in bigger resolution screen (or at least to the eyes).

Having such a feature on my Galaxy S2 wasn’t too pleasant as my screen was too small.  Although there was a way to change the DPI back, I just felt that was just asking too much for the average Joe.  But, in my recent testings with Note 2 and Note 3, I found it enlightening, it made my screen bigger, I could fit more apps into my homescreen/app drawer, just made more sense on a bigger-screen device.  Of course, you can do this on any custom ROM but I find it handy that there’s a custom ROM made just for that and works out of the box.

That ROM is Slim Kat ROM.  Also, Slim Kat ROM has a great set of navigation controls (in fact nearly unlimited) including customizable Power Menu, Hardware buttons (up to 9 shortcuts), Navigation bar, and SlimPIE Controls.  Navigation shortcuts certainly come in handy and are one of the main reasons why people install custom ROMs in the first place.

Upgrading to a new version is also easy with SlimCenter, found in your Settings menu.  Slim Team has done a terrific job of bringing their core focus to Note 2 and Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Overall, I really like Slim Kat ROM not because of its features but it’s really buttery-smooth and fast without any overclocking/tweaking.  While it’s not feature-packed, that itself makes it more stable and less bloated with stuff you really don’t need.

So, definitely give this “slim” ROM a try if you haven’t and do let me know what you think!

Downloading now….. I have been looking for something to go to from my Jedi X 19 …we will see how it performs

  2. Maurice says:

Tried this last week, but unfortunately had to move on. The in call volume was just too low. I tried changing the kernel and adjust it with Stweaks, but no luck. If anyone has a fix, please post it. Awesome ROM otherwise.

  3. Joseph Bejm says:

I wish he will start giving information on the rom if is Rooted, Tethering active and so on. How is the battery life? ETC….

  4. Joseph Bejm says:

I just installed it and run it. It does not have a root in it.
So that is second Rom that I installed it that I will need to remove and install Rom with root in it.

  5. yerman says:

    same problem, loses root

  6. vratesh virkar says:

Can some one make the app to sd possible on this rom. I am using tiagra rom and it gives me an option to move apps on sd. Kitkat doesn’t give me that option. Could some one make it available on Kitkat and then it will become the super liked rom.

    Best regards

  7. Joachim Moeller says:

My external sd wasn’t mounting. No need to panic though. Looking through xda I realized that it needs to be FAT. Mine was exFAT (I forgot that since it’s hardly new) which Samsung supports but native Android doesn’t (new to me). Copy paste, GParted Live (on disk/usb) – if you’re using Windows and copy back and voila. Problem solved.

    • deep says:

can you please explain how to do this? and provide links I installed the ROM but my SD is not detected or being mounted.

  8. preston says:

Does anyone know if this ROM has bluetooth tethering? I have Tmo GN2 and I do not have that feature and wonder how I can go about getting it.

    • Joseph Bejm says:

It has a regular tethering that I use for my Tablet but that would be a WI-FI and not Bluetooth. Maybe this would be a stupid question but is the reason that you need Bluetooth tethering?

      • preston says:

I rooted my galaxy gear and have internet, but I need a way to share my data from my Note 2. My phone is paired with my watch via bluetooth, but I cannot gain access to internet without it.

        • preston says:

I think I need to flash an international ROM on my phone, but how do you know which custom ROM is international and which ones are the newest ones?

  9. Jeff L. says:

Root access is available in this ROM. It’s fast and everything seems to be working correctly. I like it.

  10. MDGJr says:

I tried the Slim Kat but was disappointed because it did not recognize my SIM card.
I have Verizon GN2 SCH-I605. If someone could point me in the right direction for a solution to this problem I would be happy to try this ROM again.

    • Vyze says:

Did you erase everything and start fresh? Try downloading the ROM and try again. I’ve had issues like this and it was because I accidentally downloaded the Korean modem. GL.

  11. Joachim Moeller says:

I’d recommend anyone trying this one (using ART runtime instead of dalvik). With some 500+ apps total (mostly my own), a ton of SmartWatch 2 apps running, the small Gapps package and Greenifying the major stuff, I’m using only around 50% of my RAM. With DN3 and doing similar things I was typically always above 70% and often getting warning of slow device and high (set at 80%) RAM usage. If you guys want a rom with RAM to spare, this is it. The lowest I’ve ever had on this phone. The “black” switch” probably does lots of good for the battery life. I’m for once not complaining :-D

  12. Maurice says:

Is anyone having issues with low volume from the headset during calls? That was my only reason for leaving this ROM.

    • Joachim Moeller says:

Headset? As in bluetooth? Or the phone itself ie. handset? Haven’t noticed (I don’t call much) but I’ll ask the wife to call me so I can check both and get back to you.

      • Maurice says:

Yes, from the speaker on the front during a call. I tried this ROM last week, and could barely hear the person on the other end. Thanks in advance.

        • Joachim Moeller says:

Wife just called to say she’s picking up the little terrorist from kindergarten. I turned the call volume to max and it’s loud enough to almost hurt if I press it against my ear and out here in the countryside we got shitty reception, and even despite that it’s still really loud.

Not exactly being a developer ubergeek my best suggestion is as follows: Did you do md5 check and clean wipe install? I’ve started always installing the Revolution Rom Superwipe script instead of manually wiping (if I recall the name correctly). Unless using Philz with the “Format to install new Rom option”.
Try ART instead of dalvik (on non-Touchwiz roms. I went from Quadrant score of ca. 6400 to 8400 just be changing to ART and have had zero app issues so far and I’ve got way too many apps. Well, at least I don’t collect stamps (or shoes like the missus) :-P

          • Maurice says:

Little terrorist, huh? I know exactly what you mean! I downloaded last week from XDA, I’m going to try the download from here. It was a clean install using the option in Philz. I had just got everything set up on PAC ROM, but I’ll give this a try again. I appreciate you checking, because the low volume was the only deal breaker for me.

I’ll try ART as well and see if I notice a difference. I read up on it a couple of months ago, but never made the change. OAN, if shoes make her happy, Happy Wife, Happy Life!

        • Joachim Moeller says:

Download it from their website instead http://www.slimroms.net/

  13. Lee B says:

has anybody tried this for Tmobile? i wanna make sure that i can still pick up LTE and that it’s functioning well. I’m still using Jedi master 14 and android jellybean 4.1.2 because it works so flawless.

please let me know! i’ve been wanting to upgrade to kitkat

  14. Joachim Moeller says:

My dialer crashed repeatedly and the phone froze and had to force reboot. Switched back to dalvik and all OK now. Not 100% sure that ART was the problem but I’d recommend staying with dalvik nonetheless.

    • Vyze says:

My phone dialer also crashed a couple times. I barely use it to make calls :-D

I use Google Voice for calls and aside from the low call volume issue I’m still working on I really like this rom and Nova

  15. BlackBehr says:

This App is AMAZING!!!! the configurations are almost endless and the fact the the pixels are small, makes my phone size look HUGE! (no homo) All apps games even maps looks a hell of a lot better. I cant express how pleased I am with this Rom. Jedi 19x was great but was giving me problems like force close and emoji issue and stuff but this oh man Its so smooth seamless fast. I had to go through a lot to have this up and running smooth. Did a full wipe and unroot. Installed a Stock Rom, rerooted it put CWM on then flashed TWRP on which was even better. Did a full wipe, then install and now its running like a charm. Setup VPN Workstations for remote access, PSP emulator runs smoother than before without Trickster Mod Configurations, jeez i just love this rom. I rec. to anyone. Its the best. and for a reroot just flash the item he stated before and its rooted. The SuperU is there but for some reason isnt active. Overall everything works. Sycned it with my car and was ready to move.

    • Vyze says:

      You have to re-enable root.

      settings > about phone
Tap build number repeatedly to enable developer options
      Developer options > root access

  16. James Saunders says:

Are there any updates for this ROM yet for the VZW GN2?

  17. Joachim Moeller says:

My camera crashes whenever I switch it to video and syart recording. Trying MX video app instead as everything else is brilliant and can’t be bothered to reflash and setup everything again right now just to see it it works then. Tje Photosphere on slimnet is only for Nexus oddly enough. Might look for a Note 2 compatible version later.

  18. David says:

This has got to be one of the best roms i have used, but…… when ever i make or receive a call (phone) the screen goes blank and does not respond. Strange part is if my ear buds are plugged in it works fine for both placing and receiving calls, but if no headset is plugged in and i try to place a call everything goes dark and none of the hard buttons work, i have to pull the battery to end the call. receiving a call does the same thing, but about a minute after the other person hangs up the screen comes back.

Any ideas, i do not want to ditch this rom.

    thanks.

    • Pradeep says:

Same problem here buddy. Its like the basic functionality for a phone not being taken care of. I finally had to revert back to 4.3.1 slim bean only because of this issue, because I at least wanted to see who was calling me when the phone rang immediately and not 5-6 seconds after the phone rang.

  19. Justin says:

the downloads for this and omni rom for the spring model dont work so i havent been able to download them

  20. Tim says:

Is there a way to turn up headphone amplifier on this rom?

    • Geoff says:

Try using Viper4android. You need root access but you should have that already. Not only will this give you the ability to “pump up the volume” but after listening to music, your stock android drivers will make your android sound like a transister radio.
