For those of you who have bricked your Galaxy Note 2 (perhaps ended up in a bootloop), want to return to stock firmware (because you forgot to make a backup ROM!), or you want to return your Note 2 back to Samsung Service center for warranty, here’s how to unroot/unbrick your Galaxy Note 2 with stock firmware.

Also, you can use this method to update your stock ROM to the latest stock firmware.  For example, if Android 4.2 comes out, you can use this method to update instead of Kies if you want.

First, if you are rooted, I HIGHLY ADVISE you to make a backup ROM (see How to Make Backup ROM).  And after making backup ROM, do MAKE A BACKUP of your internal storage by copying everything to your hard disk.  If something goes wrong, you will be able to do a factory reset in stock Android recovery and get all of your settings, apps, photos, and videos back.

Also, if you are on a ROM like CM10, AOKP, or any ROM that’s non-Samsung, non-TouchWiz, you will definitely need to do a factory reset.  You can also do a factory reset in CWM Recovery BEFORE unrooting, that will not erase the contents of your internal storage (then you can skip the backups).

If you are returning your phone for warranty, run Triangle Away app before unrooting, that will erases any traces of root.  (Also installing a stock firmware DOES NOT increase binary count.)

This method is using ODIN and Windows computer.  If you have Linux or Mac computer, you can also use Mobile ODIN PRO (on Play Store) to do the same thing.

So, let’s unroot/unbrick your Galaxy Note 2.

Step 1. Turn your Note 2 off, then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together to enter ODIN Download mode warning screen.

Step 2. Hit Volume Up to enter Download mode and connect a micro USB cable from your Note 2 to your computer.

Step 3. Go to either or and download a compatible stock firmware for your Galaxy Note 2.  For example, if you have the international Galaxy Note 2, search for model GT-N7100 and download the appropriate firmware for your country.  If your country firmware does not exist you can use one that’s close to it, these firmwares will work on all GT-N7100.

By the time you read this tutorial and there’s T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2, you can also search for T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 firmware model number instead of GT-N7100 and same for all other carriers like Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon.

You can get T-Mobile, Sprint, or international Galaxy Note 2 Stock Firmware here.

Step 4. Unzip/extract the stock firmware zip file, you will find a file ending in “tar.md5”, that’s the stock firmware file. (Don’t have unzipping program? Download and install 7Zip first.)

Step 5. Download and unzip and run ODINv185.exe.  You should see a yellow highlighted box with a random COM number.  If you don’t see it, install Samsung USB Drivers.

Step 6. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE but click on “PDA” and point to the “tar.md5” stock firmware you downloaded/extracted earlier.

Step 7. Hit “Start” to begin the unrooting process.  This should take around 5-10 minutes.  If it stalls for some reason, you can always re-start your Note 2 into ODIN Download mode and try again.  Also, if it stalls in the beginning, try another USB hub, that usually fixes those.  Also, if you get “Kies Firmware error”, you can re-try it too, that’s same as ODIN Download mode, no need to panic.

Step 8. When it’s done successfully, you will get “PASS!”.

Step 9. If your phone boots into stock firmware, you are all good to go.  If it doesn’t boot up after 10 minutes OR you get a lot of force closes, you can do a factory reset in stock recovery.  But STOP HERE OTHERWISE.

Step 10. To do a factory reset, turn off your phone.  Then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together.  When you see the Note 2 logo, keep holding down Volume Up and Center Home button but let go of the Power button.

Step 11. Choose “wipe data/factory reset”.  DOING THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE!

After that your Note 2 should reboot just like the day you got the phone with everything erased.

The unrooting method mentioned in this website by Max Lee works 100% , if you follow his advice word to word. The triangle away app also works and was inaccessible to me , but soon i am going to donate to him for the wonderful app.

The catch is that if you boot into CWM after resetting your flash counter, it again goes to 1 , so all you have to do is instead of booting to CWM just directly check your system status and it would be a NO, After this flash your custom firmware and then check back into your donwload mode to see the values just like how you got your Note 2 off the store! A great many thanks to Max Lee and Chainfire for his Triangle Away App !

This is my number 1 site for all my note 2 needs and i suggest all of you to do so too!

Hello. Does this rooting software works on the GT-N7105 model? Thanks…

    • Jona says:

hi kim. i have GT N7105t. LTE (Australian Network – Vodafone) .. rooted obviously

yesterday 11.03.13 i installed slimbean build 1 android 4.2.2 but it was firmware meant for N7100. i tried it out and i really loved slimbean especially because its buttons and mods are incredible. and so easy to mod everything.

in the end it was the wrong firmware, device could not find mobile networks (only wifi), constant auto rebooting, camera couldnt connect to software to run etc…. so i had to reinstall stock firmware.

anyway i replied to your post because i had to restore my phone to get my network working again and the instructions above helped me restore my device firmware to android 4.1.1

thought id post incase this helps anyone as i know how difficult it is to find comments on N7105

Max keep the videos coming mate

      love from Oz!

      • liam says:

Did you lose your IMEI upon flashing the n7100 ROM? I have lost my IMEI, however I never flashed a rogue ROM. I think it might have something to do with the recent finagling between CM10 distros for t0lte and others.

  10. albattar nasrallah says:

Hello and peace to you friend,
Firstly, I used to installed a custom ROM Hypernote and after a while I feel like getting back to stock and unrooted. I’ve followed everything from your guide above up to the factory resetting at stock recovery.
However, I got this 3 issues:-
1- I can’t type using Samsung keyboard. It just stop responding after I jump to the next box during wi-fi ip setup. The phone still responding but only the keyboard stop responding. So I have to install 3rd party keyboard to solve this. In this case I’ve used Swift as a replacement.
2- My bluetooth not working. When I switch it on, it just won’t start.
3- After a while when the screen shut down. I can’t get it back on. I have to restart it by pressing the power button for few seconds.
Any idea how I can resolve this matter? I’ve been searching on the net to solve this problem but can’t find any.
Thank you in advance for your attention.

    • albattar nasrallah says:

i have the same problem my pc wont recognize my phone and cant connect to odin pls help max or anyone quick.

        • Max Lee says:

First, make sure you have drivers installed, if yellow box doesn’t show up, try using another USB port, also don’t use a USB hub, if everything fails, try on another computer. If that doesn’t work either it could be your USB module went bad, you can actually replace it pretty easily I have a tutorial on this site.

          • gerard says:

Hi max thanks for the response but non of the things work I changed my micro usb port followed you instructions from your website but my phone still wont connect to odin is that what you mean by usb module still stuck on samsung note2 logo pls is there another way I cant take it to sprint they’ll know its rooted thanks again hope to hear from you soon.

    Hey-thanks for these instructions. HELP!!

My phone (rooted) was doing alot of FC’s and then got stuck in the boot animation. Whenever I tried to go into CWM manually to do a factory data reset—the phone would automatically reboot and get stuck in the boot loop.

I followed these instructions, installed the firmware and got a PASS. Phone started to boot-got the T-Mo animation, and now it is STUCK on the Samsung boot animation again.

Should I pull the battery out and try to do a factory reset in CWM? Or is 10 minutes a normal amount of time for the first boot up???

Galaxy Note 2 SPH-L900 has no OS. I’ve tried all usb ports, Shutdown restart of notebook, nothing works. I have DL’d some zip files and copied to SD card but when I install them nothing happens. I even extracted a file called boot.img and copied it to SD card and tried all the buttons on Win Recovery but nothing still works. Last I boot to Odin but it doesn’t find anything either.

The zipfile I found is about 5.8meg. I see a file on here is 849meg… do I need this file? (the download says it will take over 4 hours (I’ve been trying this nonstop now since 7:30pm last night and it is now a little after 4am… is all this really necessary so many way and apps and everything? WOW I must be the stupidest because I can’t get anything to work, mostly because I can’t find easy instructions I expect such as:
    1. download or file1.img or file1.bin (or something similar)
    2. copy that file or its contents to sd card directory \system
    3. run win recovery or Odin… it will find the file otherwise point it to it.
    4. install it.
    5. reboot to operating system now running stock.

how far off am I. what is the name of the file(s) needed and where do I put them on sd card? etc.
    Thank you

I have a note 2 from verizon that is stuck in a boot loop, ie it shows the samsung galaxy screen, reboots, shows the screen, reboots endlessly. I can get into ODIN MODE no problem. Using Odin3 v1.85 it recognizes the port (box turns yellow), accepts the PDA file, but fails a the NAND Write stage. This is the print out from the Message window in Odin:

I have tried a previous version of odin, with no luck there either.

I had the phone rooted, then unrooted it (this may be my mistake), took the Verizon OTA that locks the boot loader, then took the OTA for 4.1.2. on the reboot from the second OTA, the boot loop started.

Is there hope for this phone, or do I need to try to work something out with Verizon, either exchange or cough up a fist full of cash for a replacement?

    Thanks in advance

After watching the video and reading the tutorial here I’m thinking about unrooting my Note 2. However, it concerns me that in some of the comments people have reported their device still showing as ‘modified’ in Settings-About Device-Status. If I unroot I really don’t want to see this and I want to be able to get OTA updates etc.
I’m running UK rooted stock Jelly Bean 4.1.2.

Finally, do you recommend doing a factory reset, coming from rooted stock? I would like to end up with a nice, clean system.

Any advice on these matters would be helpful, thanks.

How do i restore my note 2 imei if i have no backup?

  76. Kuttyjoe says:

Yep, another satisfied customer. I think I screwed up by accidentally doing a system wipe in recovery. After that, I had no signal, IMEI missing. I flashed the last good rom but the problem didn’t go away. So now I’m back to factory fresh, unrooted. Now it’s time to root it again and put my custom rom back on it.

The instructions are very much appreciated. I would have had to send my phone back to Samsung for repair.

    HI Max
I have a note 2 N7105T from vodafone australia. I have been trying a lot of customs roms(I am almost a romholic).
My note 2 is now stuck at the samsung boot screen. I am able to go to download mode and recovery mode (in the recovery mode, it shows only a “update” not “install zip” option).
I followed the above steps and progressed well up to step8 and got trapped in the samsung bootscreen. I have repeated the above 8 steps about 10 times, everytime I get a “PASS” from Odin and notice the stock rom is getting installed in the note 2 properly but still getting struck at the boot screen. I have also got into the recovery mode and wiped the data, cache and dalvik.
Please advise, if there is anythingelse I can try. As I am able to get into download/recovery mode, I am thinking I still have a chance to recover the note. I have some backup of custom roms also. Cheers

    Hi Max,
I was wondering if there’s a method (I don’t mind losing all the data on my phone) to unroot the phone (my model is SGH-I317M Bell Canada) and have no “0, emulated, legacy, UsbDriveA, B,.., F” folders.
I recently tried to revert back to stock ROM, but these folders are annoying me.

what I have tried so far is:
Factory reset -> wipe cache -> download mode -> flash stock ROM (4.3 from Sammobile) -> root -> triangle away(I also want to reset the flash counter) -> unroot (from SuperSU) -> factory reset

The folders are still there, and the only thing that worked was the flash counter.

If there’s a way to bring the phone back to it’s original state (as if right out of the factory), that would be great.

Hi Max, i have been your follower since the days when i used HTC desire. All of my devices since then are rooted from your site… Thumbs up!! 🙂

I have some issues which wondering if you could help…Recently i have updated to 4.2.2 official OTA on my Note 2 (GT-N7100). After the update i found that my wifi cannot be used, thus i thought that there must be something wrong with the installation. So i decided to reinstall the firmware but only this time i told my self, might as well i root it… so i did. I followed your method of doing it and it worked.. sort of… it did’t reboot into CWM so flash the latest CWM (using odin) instead… Hooray it worked and I flashed the omega rom 4.2.2.. It was successful but the wifi issues is still there. I checked at the omega rom for fix and it said that i should have the new bootloader… and i did.. but the wifi issue is still there. Thus i think maybe antenna issues so decided i want to send for warranty.
So i decided to unroot using the method layout on this page. It was successful but now my phone cannot detect my carrier, and i found out that this was due to the KNOX have void…. duhhh (my mistake for ignoring the knox issue before)… I am ok with warranty voided. So i rooted back the phone using TWRM, and flashed back the omega rom. It ended up im stuck in the startup screen… so i start to panic. I re flash the latest CWM, and reflashed Omega… still stuck at the startup screen…

    Please, please, please Help…
    Thanks a million…..

    Hello everyone.

While in that process, my pc crashed, therefore I tried to restore my phone using Kies, something that isn’t working, because the program itself closes before starting the software installation (no idea why, it’s the latest version).

Then I came to your site (where previously learned how to root my phone), downloaded the file N7100UBDMA3_UBDMA1_UWADMA3_HOME.tar.md5 from Samsung-updates, and also Odin 3.09

Nevertheless, I have tried several times to install it, without any luck. Odin works OK until about 30% of installation (I see a progress blue bar on my phone’s screen that stops), and the last thing I see in Odin is

    Complete (Write) operation failed!
All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

Other than that, on my phone’s screen I read in red letters: UNSUPPORTED VERSION

If anyone can give an idea about what I can to to revive my phone, more than highly appreciated and grateful.
